I’m getting ready this weekend to replace one of my windows 2003 domain controllers. This DC is a DNS,DHCP, and WINS server.

Moving DHCP from windows 2000 to 2003 was a royal pain if both machines where already DC’s

Microsoft has much improved this process for 2003 to 2008

Here’s the steps to follow from a MS KB Article

VirtualCenter 2.5 upgrade issue with SQL 2000

1

Category : Misc

I allows find it good to wait at least a few weeks before I do any major upgrades. I’ll let other people shake out the bugs. Its a good thing because we are running our vcenter on SQL 2000. Follow the link for the fix before you try the upgrade or if you already tried and failed. Big note from the KB, if you don’t follow the steps in the KB, it will over write your database, you do backup your database before you do any upgrade, right?

I’ve not yet got my hands really dirty on ESX 3.0.x to ESX 3.5 and VirtualCenter 2.0.x to 2.5 upgrades. Although crudely “play” with the process under the Release Candate. Initially, I had a permissions problem with the VirtualCenter upgrade and my SQL 2000 server. There’s been a length forum thread on this which I have been involved with. It’s become clear that if you have a SQL 2000 server additional permissions are required for an upgrade, which were not previously required in previous upgrades from VC 1>2 or the intra-upgrades from say 2.0.0>2.0.1>2.0.2

A KB article from VMware outlines this issue. As far as I know its not an issue for SQL 2005…

Stupid back plane

Category : Rants

I’m finally leaving work today. I got called at 7:30 because users couldn’t connect to our ERP system. I remoted in and the server looked fine. So I called the database guy. He made a change and the users could connect.
At about 1PM I get a call from the database guy that he was in looking at the server and saw I bunch of “failure to write” errors. (I didn’t see anyting when I looked in the morning) At this time I’m shopping about 30 minutes away. I ask if production is still running. Not sure, I get called back at 2:30 (still shopping) production is running and database is down.

So at 3 I come in and take a look, amber lights on the mirrored set that is the c: drive….not good. I reboot the server and the lights turn green, hooray. I still call dell and ask them to ship the parts.

Well the parts finally arived and where installed. All the hardware seems to be up, I emailed the dba and I’m going home.

Microsoft Standard User Analyzer

Category : Post from around the Net

Overview

The Standard User Analyzer
helps developers and IT professionals diagnose issues that would prevent a
program from running properly without administrator privileges. On Windows
Vista, even administrators run most programs with standard user privileges by
default, so it is important to ensure that your application does not have
administrator access as a dependency.

Using the Standard User Analyzer to
test your application can identify the following administrator dependencies and
return the results in a graphical interface:

* File access
* Registry
access
* INI files
* Token issues
* Security privileges
* Name
space issues
* Other issues

This tool also complements the
Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) 5.0. ACT 5.0 will include a User Account
Control agent that you can deploy to user desktops to identify applications that
require administer privileges. The Standard User Analyzer is designed to be run
on the developer or tester’s workstation to test and troubleshoot a specific
application. Issues identified with the Standard User Analyzer can also be
entered into you ACT 5.0 database so you can track the application compatibility
across your environment.

Busy week, not many posts

Category : News

Let’s see Monday started by having the drive our exchange logs on fill up. Yeah….who would have thought we could have 3GB of changes to the database over a weekend…..exeutil is your friend…
The rest of the week, we’ve had an onsite vmware workshop. We installed 3 Dell blades with ESX onto our SAN and we now have VCenter and Vmotion. This stuff ROCKS!!! VCenter is SO MUCH better than the MUI you get when you only have ESX. The workshop runs one more day. Only a few more things to clear up and then it’s time to move about 15 machines to the new virtual server farm.
This Saturday we have family coming for a Christmas party and if the weather is good enough we are heading to Detroit Sunday for the Lions game. You can’t beat free tickets!!!!

Exchange 2003 Databases and the Exchange store

Category : Post from around the Net

Another Exchange posting. Here only because postnuke doesn’t like all the html in the post.
later,jb

I’m playing around, trying to tweak Exchange 2003 to get the best possible performance in my Virtual machine demo environment so that my demos look good, and I’ve been reading the Optimising Storage document on TechNet.   There’s a table in this document which talks about the stored and their impact on disk I/O which I thought was worth reproducing here.  I tend to get asked for this quite a lot so here it is…

  Sauce Reader v1.3 (BETA)

Category : Misc

Sauce Reader v1.3 (BETA) released

Version 1.3 of Sauce Reader is a huge leap from 1.2.1. We’ve fixed more than 100 bugs and added the following major features:

  • Sauce Reader is now an integrated weblogging environment with posting support.

  • User interface further cleaned, streamlined and improved.
  • Auto archiving.
  • Search folders.
  • Flagging of items.
  • Limited keyboard shortcut improvements.

Upgrade notes:

  • Users of v1.2.1 will be automatically updated to the new version. Note that this process will clean up your data and may repair your search database.

  • Unfortunately, users of versions 1.2 or earlier will need to download and install v1.3 manually. This is due to problems with the auto-updater code in those older versions.

At Synop we thrive on user feedback. Please send us your feedback on Sauce Reader. We love to hear your stories, comments, gripes and praise. Your suggestions have a direct impact on future versions of the product so please help us build the best product possible!

PS: This was posted using the new integrated weblogging environment in Sauce Reader v1.3!
