Paid to Surf - Again

AGLOCO is a new paid to surf site. Back in the day I made a little extra money with AllAdvantage. I’ve check along with others and we haven’t found any spyware or anything extra in their software. Right now you are limited to five hours per month, which really isn’t too much. So the key to making any money will be referrals. My referall code is BBBR3018.

Let me know if you if you sign up, so I can track their referral tracking.

NoPhoneTrees.com: GetHuman.com

I hate phone tree’s, I’ll have to get this a try next time I have to call about my creditcard  or cable bill.

Most of us have heard of GetHuman.com, which offers people directions on navigating phone trees or direct-access phones numbers in order to reach a live person. Now a new service by NoPhoneTrees.com takes this one (small) step further.

After verifying your phone number, the website will call a service provider and navigate the phone tree for you. All you have to do is pick up when they call and you’re already on hold for the operator. I just tried this with one of my Citibank cards and it worked as advertised, saving me an entire 15 seconds ;) Unfortunately, it doesn’t wait on hold for you and call you when someone actually picks up - I am guessing the lag time would be too great and the customer service rep would probably just hang up. Bummer - that would be cool.

First Snow

Today we got the first snow of the year. I didn’t even think about all the schools that where closed today when I took my daughter to daycare, but they where closed because of the weather. So I got to stay home with her today and work from home as much as she let me :-) Melissa went to work and said the roads where awful, you would think for a winter storm that was all over the news the night before that the plow trucks would be out in the morning. But nope, and from the radio is sounds like there where lots of accidents.
This weekend we are moving our SQL server from so REALLY old HP servers to virtual machines. Atleast until we have the money next year to move to new dell servers.

Enjoy the snow

The Best Time To Buy Everything

Here’s my tip, buy a car at the end of a quarter not just the end of a month. This allows loads true for Dell computers. Buy at the end of the quarter.

Here are two different viewpoints on ‘The best time to buy everything’, one from SmartMoney and the other from CNN Money. Some excerpts are below, see the articles for more.

Airline tickets
SmartMoney and CNN agree: Buy on a Wednesday, about 21 days (or just a couple of days earlier) before your flight. This is when airlines release their available seats for the upcoming weekend and the weekend after.

Televisions
SmartMoney: Six to 12 months after a particular model is launched.
CNN: While the blowout sales on electronics tend to cluster around the holidays, even cheaper deals on TVs can be found in the spring beginning in April, after the end of the fiscal year in Japan.

Thecus N5200 3.5TB NAS Appliance Reviewed

I was going to order two buffalo tech 2TB pro units on Monday. but these devices look VERY interesting. I like the Nsync feature to auto replicate to another unit…. Which is what I need to do…I don’t look like these units are available until the end of this month…

I’m a storage junkie. I have 1TB in my Media Center, and it hardly seems like enough now. I have personally wanted to stick a NAS device on my home network, and it appears that if money were no object (it is), HEXUS thinks the Thecus N5200 NAS Appliance is not only worthy of being on my network, it is made for the enthusiast within me (the one that gets in money fights with my wife all the time). With 5 available, hot swappable SATA drive bays, the N5200 is not necessarily meant for the average home user. However, small to medium sized offices and enthusiast home users will definitely want to take note - the Thecus N5200 is a real winner. More…

Eating out.

Here’s some sites to help you save some money when you eat out.

Restaurant.com - Helps me save $20 if the restaurant participates (less than $5 for a $25 gift cert with discount codes and fatcash). See my previous post here for more information.

Opentable.com - For making reservations. I’ve used this site countless of times and I highly recommend it. On top of saving your time, there is a reward points program that allows you to save extra money (sometimes $10) if you show up to your reservations.

Menupages.com - Great site for taking a glimpse at the menu before you dine. Also great for ordering delivery from places you have never been to! Most restaurants in NYC seem to be listed here, and they recently just expanded to cover San Francisco and Boston. Has helpful reviews too.

Citysearch.com and Gayot.com - both review sites that help me decide if a restaurant is worth trying out or not. On top of that, they both integrate with Opentable.com.

I hope that helps. While some of those sites only apply to Manhattan, restaurant.com and opentable.com both work nationwide. I highly recommend them both. I was even able to use opentable.com when I was traveling over the winter holidays in Vancouver!

Are there any other sites that you would recommend?

Second Chances?

Randy, always seems to hit the nail on the head, Sh*t I think we should bring back public hangings and make jails a little less comfortable….No one has a “right” to watch TV or use the internet.
Oh yeah the ACLU sucks and waste tax payers money…more on that later. I’m too worked up right now.

MSNBC: N.C. carries out nation’s 1,000th execution
Convicted killer dies by lethal injection; death penalty reinstated in 1976 […] “He made one mistake and now it’s costing him his life,” said Kenneth Smith, 35, who visited with his wife and two children. “A lot of people get a second chance. I think he deserves a second chance.”

He made one mistake? One?!

OK, I’m all for second chances… take a look at this, from the article:

Boyd, 57, did not deny that he shot and killed Julie Curry Boyd, 36, and her father, 57-year-old Thomas Dillard Curry. Family members said Boyd stalked his estranged wife after they separated following 13 stormy years of marriage and once sent a son to her house with a bullet and a threatening note.

There is mistake: sending “a son to her house with a bullet and a threatening note”. That’s the mistake. Right there. Clear as day. When you then follow through on the threat and shot your wife and father-in-law? That’s another mistake.

And no offense, pal, but if that was is only mistake throughout his entire life… well, I think it’s a huge enough mistake to forfeit your own life. We’re not talking self defense here. Not vehicular homicide. He purposely went to his wife and shot her - that’s as premeditated as you can get. And if you want the insanity plea, fine, but then his life should still be forfeit: if he’s insane, he won’t understand what that last shot means.

Ya know what, I was wrong: take offense to it if you want.
