- Remove users and groups from site access – Windows SharePoint Services – Microsoft Office – To properly manage access to the resources on your site, it is important for site administrators to promptly cancel the access of users who are no longer with the organization or whose role has changed such that their permission level needs to be adjusted.
- Ask the Directory Services Team : RSAT Released for Windows 7 – How do I get back the missing tabs?

RSAT for Vista finally got back 4 of the 5 missing tabs for ADUC, but RSAT for Windows 7 RTM is still missing them. I assume they should match the names you see in Server 2008 R2:

•Remote Desktop Services Profile

•Environment

•Sessions

•Remote Control

•Dial-in

Since we now have some RODCs on our domain, it would also be nice to have the Password Replication tab.
- How to install and configure the Indexing Service on a Windows Server 2008-based computer – This article describes how to install and configure the Indexing Service on a Windows Server 2008-based computer. Additionally, this article describes the changes that were made to the Indexing Service for Windows Server 2008.
- What is Enhanced vMotion Compatibility anyway? | The VMguy – Let me explain the problem, as some customers find it, and some do not. Here’s the issue: You start your virtual infrastructure by purchasing 3 hosts. Let’s say that the 3 hosts have Intel E5310 processors in them. You start to load up your VM’s on that cluster over the next 6 months. When the cluster is full you go back to your OEM vendor of choice, only to find that they no longer make that server model with a E5310 processor. The same model from the OEM now contains a Intel E5420 CPU. There are some differences in this CPU from those in the original hosts , specifically the instruction set (SSE4). If you try to add that new host to the existing cluster you will quickly find that you cannot vMotion to it.
- CPUID – CPU-Z is a freeware that gathers information on some of the main devices of your system.

If you are still running Windows 7 RC (like me), just remember the RC expires on Monday. I’ve been running a backup on my install before I install my black edition from my windows 7 house party. The backup has been running for about 10 hours and its only 40% done! Not sure why its so slow. I’m backing up to a USB 2.0 hard drive, using the built in backup utility. I have 300 GB of data including lots of MP3,photos, and AVI files. But this is taking forever! I Just hope if finishes early tomorrow so I have time to install and configure the RTM.
Once I get the RTM installed I want to be better about doing regularly scheduled backups. I’ love to find something that will backup my files local to a USB drive AND back them up to the cloud ( I hate that term) Anyone know of software that will do that?
I’ve been really impressed with Windows 7 and we are just starting our testing with it at work.
Anyone have a tablet PC running windows 7? how do you like it. I wait a tablet, but I want a big one. My current notebook is a Dell D820. I want a large screen to right on, I’m not concerned about the weight. I don’t travel that much, but I use lots of paper notepads, I want to try OneNote 2010 with windows 7 and a large tablet. But they seem to just keep making them smaller not larger
later,jb

At work we will start testing Windows 7 within the IS department Q2 next year. Our current AD forest is still in mixed mode 2000!!! So I have some cleanup and upgrades todo on that before I start working about windows 7 GPO’s. I just need to retire and move the roles of the old 2000 DC’s. We are also retiring a few domains and merging into the forest root and utilize OU’s better. Below is good information about windows 7 GPO’s once I get there next year.
Now that you’ve obviously purchased, installed, and started playing with your Windows 7 client, you’re probably fantasizing about all the great things that will happen to your environment when you upgrade all of the machines in your site / OU / domain / basement to Windows 7 as well. Let me tell you, it’s going to be great. Why? Because you’ll have GP Preferences client side extensions installed already in all of those Windows 7 clients! That means that you can map drives and push out shortcuts and add printers and configure power plans for all these Windows 7 machines from your own Windows 7 client (with RSAT) or with Windows Server 2008 R2.
To answer the question in the title, NO, you do not need to change your update your Active Directoy (if it’s at least 2003) to take advantage of sweet new Group Policy features and settings. The exception is if the application that the setting is relevant to requires an AD upgrade, like BitLocker. This is a good article on configuring BitLocker in your AD, written by the guys on the Directory Services team: http://blogs.technet.com/askds/archive/2009/08/18/bitlocker-and-active-directory.aspx
Also – check out an overview plus good getting started tips on this website: Group Policy Management for IT Pros. If there was anything in the above paragraphs that you have questions on, read this article first. Seriously.
