Ten Tips for Fatbloggers
I’ve talked about doing something about my weight for awhile now. Melissa got me a pedimeter, that didn’t last long. We had a membership to a gym for a while a few years back (before Grace) and we went about 2-3 a week, but the gym had a fire and they raised the rates after so we decided not to go back. I got a new bike this summer so we are riding some, and we try to walk with Grace and Dexter atleast everyother day. But I think I need to do more. I found http://www.fitday.com/ from fatblogger . I’ll take a look at in once I get back from China.
I found out about the fatblogger movement through Jason Calacanis’s blog a while ago, and figured I’d finally join the fray.
Eight years ago I weighed in at a whopping 225 pounds, but I dropped 65 pounds after I became a father (after all, I wanted to be able to keep up with the little demons). My weight has fluctuated a little since then, but overall I’ve kept it off, and I sure feel better (a lot better) than I did when I was that fat dude at the computer surrounded by pizza boxes.
So, here I go with ten tips for fatbloggers, based on lessons I’ve learned and mistakes I’ve made since deciding to become a healthy geek:
- Do strength training. Too many people stick with cardio and never touch the weights. Yes, you do need cardio - after all, it burns calories and exercises your heart. But strength training raises your basal metabolism, enabling your body to burn more calories every minute of every day. It also strengthens your bones, decreases your blood pressure, and makes you look better as well.
- Skip the energy bars. Take a look at the label on your favorite energy bar, then compare it to the label on your favorite candy bar. Look similar? That’s because many so-called “energy bars” amount to little more than candy bars with added protein. Of course, a post-workout snack is essential, but you’d do better eating something like a chicken sandwich instead of grabbing a bar.
- Forget perfection. Every gym has them: those perfect-body specimens that people either envy or drool over. But unless you’re planning to be on the cover of some fitness magazine, don’t emulate these people. They spend way too much time exercising, and often have unhealthy eating disorders. Everyone wants to look good, but if your goal is to feel good as well, forget trying to get a perfect body and focus on getting a better body instead.
- Try yoga. Some guys think yoga isn’t a “manly” way to exercise, and I have to confess I used to think that, too. But I tried yoga after a friend recommended it to me, and it kicked my butt. Yoga is a great way to build strength, increase flexibility and improve your balance. And it also helps calm your mind - perfect after a hard day of work.
- Join a group. Have a tough time committing to regular exercise? Try joining a group, like a local running or biking club. I joined a marathon training group, and our regular runs helped keep me on track and made me less prone to unhealthy eating and drinking (ever try to go on a long run after a night on the town? not fun.)
- Exercise with your kids. This one is hard for me, because I work at home and use exercise as a way to get out of the house. But it’s important for your kids to see you being healthy, so if possible, let them exercise with you - or use them as exercise props. When my kids were younger, I’d do bicep curls with them and let them sit on my back while I did push-ups. They thought it was great fun, and it was also a great workout for me.
- Don’t forget the core. Lifting weights and pounding the treadmill is a good start, but don’t forget to exercise your core. Strong core muscles improve your posture, and can help prevent back pain. If you’re a runner, regularly doing core exercises will improve your form and make you less prone to injury due to fatigue.
- Work with a trainer. Hiring a personal trainer may seem like a yuppie indulgence, but if you’re new to exercise, it’s worth investing in several sessions with a trainer just to learn the correct form for various exercises. Improper form often leads to injury, which defeats the purpose of working out in the first place. Plus, a trainer can teach you all sorts of exercises you’ve never heard of.
- Always warm up. If you’re pushed for time, you’re probably tempted to jump right into your workout without warming up. Don’t do it! Your muscles won’t be ready for the hard stuff unless you first spend a few minutes stretching or doing light exercise.
- Take a break. If you’ve been exercising regularly for a long time and find your motivation lagging, there’s nothing wrong with taking a few weeks off. Exercise isn’t supposed to be an addiction - it’s supposed to be a fun way to look and feel better. If it stops being fun, it won’t kill you to give it up for a little while. You may even find that you perform better when you return.
- Bonus tip: give yourself an excuse to indulge (as long as you do it infrequently). I usually eat healthy and take care of myself when I’m at home, but I give it up when I travel. Whenever I visit my co-workers at NewsGator, I eat bad hotel food and participate in four-hour-long “happy hours” while I’m there. When I return home, it’s back to being healthy again. In some weird way, I find it easier to eat healthy when I know I can indulge every now and then.

Great Day
Today was my first fathers day. It was a great day. Melissa let me sleep in well she took Grace to meijers in the morning. When I got up I got my presents: a gift certificate for a golf center, some simpsons stuff and Wii Play. So now we have two Wii controllers.
Around lunch we headed to muskegon for lunch, we where going to try Rafferty’s Dockside, but they only had a buffet until 2, so then we tried ”The station” but that isn’t open on Sundays. We needed up going to Ruby Tuesdays. The important thing is I was able to spend a nice day with my two lovely ladies
I got Melissa a popcorn maker for her birthday so we are going to try it tonight and play Wii.

Eating out.
Here’s some sites to help you save some money when you eat out.
Restaurant.com - Helps me save $20 if the restaurant participates (less than $5 for a $25 gift cert with discount codes and fatcash). See my previous post here for more information.Opentable.com - For making reservations. I’ve used this site countless of times and I highly recommend it. On top of saving your time, there is a reward points program that allows you to save extra money (sometimes $10) if you show up to your reservations.
Menupages.com - Great site for taking a glimpse at the menu before you dine. Also great for ordering delivery from places you have never been to! Most restaurants in NYC seem to be listed here, and they recently just expanded to cover San Francisco and Boston. Has helpful reviews too.
Citysearch.com and Gayot.com - both review sites that help me decide if a restaurant is worth trying out or not. On top of that, they both integrate with Opentable.com.
I hope that helps. While some of those sites only apply to Manhattan, restaurant.com and opentable.com both work nationwide. I highly recommend them both. I was even able to use opentable.com when I was traveling over the winter holidays in Vancouver!
Are there any other sites that you would recommend?

Second Chances?
Randy, always seems to hit the nail on the head, Sh*t I think we should bring back public hangings and make jails a little less comfortable….No one has a “right” to watch TV or use the internet.
Oh yeah the ACLU sucks and waste tax payers money…more on that later. I’m too worked up right now.
MSNBC: N.C. carries out nation’s 1,000th execution
Convicted killer dies by lethal injection; death penalty reinstated in 1976 […] “He made one mistake and now it’s costing him his life,” said Kenneth Smith, 35, who visited with his wife and two children. “A lot of people get a second chance. I think he deserves a second chance.”He made one mistake? One?!
OK, I’m all for second chances… take a look at this, from the article:
Boyd, 57, did not deny that he shot and killed Julie Curry Boyd, 36, and her father, 57-year-old Thomas Dillard Curry. Family members said Boyd stalked his estranged wife after they separated following 13 stormy years of marriage and once sent a son to her house with a bullet and a threatening note.
There is mistake: sending “a son to her house with a bullet and a threatening note”. That’s the mistake. Right there. Clear as day. When you then follow through on the threat and shot your wife and father-in-law? That’s another mistake.
And no offense, pal, but if that was is only mistake throughout his entire life… well, I think it’s a huge enough mistake to forfeit your own life. We’re not talking self defense here. Not vehicular homicide. He purposely went to his wife and shot her - that’s as premeditated as you can get. And if you want the insanity plea, fine, but then his life should still be forfeit: if he’s insane, he won’t understand what that last shot means.
Ya know what, I was wrong: take offense to it if you want.

I Feel Like I’m Taking Crazy Pills!
You tell them Stone!
This is insane. It ended some 140 years ago, yet companies today are being punished for sins of the past.
Wachovia had to research its past in order to comply with a new Chicago ordinance that requires any business that is going for a city contract to disclose whether they profited from slavery. Slavery that ended 140 years ago! Wachovia said that they had from a company they acquired, Georgia Railroad and Banking Company and the Bank of Charleston, that it had taken slaves as collateral for loans issued over 140 years ago. Now get this, the state that this bank was in and at the time slavery was legal so the company did nothing wrong, yet today the company that had no direct tie to the slaves only purchased out the company at some point, must say that it has a slave past. This is ridiculous. Can you imagine being held liable for what your forefathers had done? Australia would have to put itself in jail under this kind of thought.

labor filled weekend
I’ll admit it, I don’t like manual labor. But this weekend was full of it.
Saturday we help my father in law stain his cabin. We came back home Sunday morning and my friend that is an electrian installed some more outlets in the garage ( I did help some, but only did a tenth of the work he did) Monday we made a trip to home depot and purchased everything we needed to start insulating the garage. We got about a third of the way done on Monday. We need to finish today or tomorrow. Because I’ll be out of town Thursday and Friday. Sunday we are starting on the drywall. Ick.
I still haven’t done much with the backyard, its still all weeds, I sprayed weed killer on them last week and they are still green!!!
Oh well, I think I’ll update the site to MT 3.11 soon, plus I need to fix the links on the right hand side. In IE there’s a break somewhere that messes up the layout.
Hope everyone had a good three day weekend.
later,jb
