VPS and the Cloud – Virtual Lightning in a Bottle

The notion of database systems and storage working off-site and in a fail proof “container” was something considered impossible by many, despite the centralized server farms common in business even 20 years ago. Though the groundwork had been laid for virtualized and cloud options, many companies couldn’t visualize the practical benefit of an off-site solution or one that moved their data into the hands of a provider. Now, both virtual private server (VPS) and cloud hosting options are becoming commonplace, as the spectrum of virtual lightning in a bottle expands.

The Virtual Groundwork

Both cloud hosting and virtual private server options begin in the same place – outside a local data center. Instead of a company hosting its data on-site and pushing down its own patches, updates and server improvements, it can now have its content managed by a provider who will guarantee things like uptime, I/O resources and privacy from other users on a server. From this server, virtual and cloud hosting providers can disperse infrastructure, platforms and services, allowing any computer a company owns to perform the same functions and access the same information so long as it has an Internet connection and the correct permissions.

The Broad Spectrum

Image via Wikipedia

All cloud technology relies on the basic concept of virtualization – that data can be centralized and more efficiently managed than when hosted at a local level. A common hosting choice for those companies just making the leap to virtualization will be a single, Hyper-V server that can host multiple virtual servers. In a Windows VPS hosting environment, these virtual servers are managed by the Hyper-V hypervisor, which controls both the partitioning of the server for a single or multiple customers and also how resources are distributed to each virtual server instance.

It is now possible for companies to access more “cloudy” versions of this hosting technology – the basic difference here being that cloud-based solutions include a high degree of redundancy and often multiple servers to prevent failure. What are known as High Availability (HA) Clustered Servers are now available and are powered by storage arrays that are “failover ready”. Instead of causing a shutdown of the server if a problem occurs, failover ready clusters are able to shunt data to another physical machine within the clustered server infrastructure in order to maintain user access and limit data loss.

To the end user, virtualized and cloud technologies often appear the same – they are built on the same basic principle of secure, always-on servers. But while a virtual private server can offer a significant increase over the management of data at the local level, basic cloud options can help ramp up not only stability but access for businesses. These hidden benefits may not be apparent on the surface, but adopting even small pieces of cloud technology now can help a business prepare for a full move as they find more functionality in virtualized services – with the right framework in place, floating into the cloud becomes a much simpler prospect.

There is a wealth of options available for group conferencing, and business owners can easily become overwhelmed by the special features, cost comparisons, and technological aspects. Below are three major applications used frequently by businesses both large and small; each has unique features to fit your individual needs and provide you with the ideal service.

Skype

Skype is best known for transitioning outside of the business world into personal use. Boasting free internet calls globally, the conference calling feature is often used to connect families with relatives overseas, or for a group of people to collaborate on an MMORPG or online gaming platform. For a fee, you can also make calls from a computer to a phone; prices vary by country, or you can choose an unlimited plan by region for $7.99 to $13.99 per month. Non-Skype members can join a call through a subscription or credit, both available through the website, where Skype can be downloaded at no cost. They offer group video chats for three to ten people, but other visual data solutions are limited. Aside from instant messaging and simple file transfers, Skype’s conference calling features are somewhat limited.

OnConference

Unlike Skype, OnConference works over a telecom network. As opposed to VoIP (voice over internet protocol), this virtually guarantees solid sound quality and eliminates the chance of Wi-Fi hiccups causing an interruption. If meetings are at remote locations (outside cell range) or if conducting a meeting exclusively over your computer is not a priority, this may be a good option for you. Group conferencing is charged at a flat rate of 19 cents per minute per person. International callers can dial in at no cost to them using a local number. The chairperson incurs any international costs, which ranges from the standard 19 cents per minute to up to $1.89 for more remote locations. Access codes are permanent; instead of changing for each meeting, which eliminates the need for reservations. Up to 96 callers can attend a meeting. OnConference is the only service on this list with instant live support, accessed simply by pressing 0 during a meeting.

GoToMeeting

This service is focused exclusively on online meetings. Up to 15 people can attend a web conference, and like OnConference, desktop and slide sharing are available. Instead of paying by meeting, members pay a subscription rate for unlimited meetings, after a 30-day free trial. GoToMeeting gives the option of integrating phone lines, but they will not be able to participate in the visual aspects of the meeting. It is also the only service that claims compatibility with iPads, iPhones, Macs, PCs, and other smart phone devices such as the Android. Video conferencing is available as well, and certain types of meetings can be recorded on most platforms for later viewing. They offer different plans for certain services, ranging in price from $468 to more than $4000 per year for customized plans.

No related posts.

We had a windows 2003 server that was getting an error running scheduled tasks. When you tried to view the properties of that task you would get the follow error:

The attempt to retrieve account information for the specified task failed; therefore, the task did not run. Either an error occurred, or no account information existed for the task.
The specific error is:
0×80090016: Keyset does not exist

Searching Microsoft’s site, they had a fix but required you to boot into safe mode. This was a production server I did not want to take down.

But I found a way to fix it without needing to enter safe mode.

Try this:

Stop the Task Scheduler Service

Delete the files from C:Documents and Settings-All Users-Application Data-Microsoft-Crypto-RSA-S-1-5-18

Start the Task Schedule Service

Go into each task and re-enter the password for the user account under which the task runs.

Give each task a test run.

That should do it for you. A much better process than booting into safe mode and you don’t even have to reboot the computer.

I seem to keep needing to do this so I thought I’d write up a very quick post so Its easier to find next time.

I’ve had to do this for our QLogic CNA and installing Dell mib files.

You need to install the vmware CLI on your workstation.

start the vmware cli and I have to cd to ‘bin’ for the commands to work.

put the server you want to work on into maintenance mode from the vi client

Then use vihostupdate.pl to do the install/upload

Here is the vmware docs site link for vihostupdate.pl

http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vcli/vcli41/doc/reference/vihostupdate.html

Image via Wikipedia

The quick and dirty command is

vihostupdate.pl –server [IP address] –username root –install –bundle c:file_location

You’ll want to use a zip file for driver, they are normally found in the offline-bundle folder of the ISO

For the Dell mibs you just need to use the mib file.

Hope this helps someone, I know I use it a lot more than I expected.

Enterprise cloud computing and SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) are more a product of business evolutionary necessity than invention. Economic realities have forced companies to reduce costs while maximizing their resources used for critical tasks. Several factors have shaped the direction IT departments have taken toward SaaS:

• Shifting software licensing models
• Abbreviated product cycles
• Increasing global competition
• Need to control IT costs for infrastructure and trained technical personnel

Cloud computing provided IT what they had been needing for some time: a dependable approach to expansion of capabilities and capacity without having to stop business in the interim. More significantly, it allowed this to happen without the normal expenditure of time and resources to add new infrastructure, acquire new software license, or training personnel.

The enterprise cloud approach ensures a consistency that enables businesses to guarantee service and security that was not previously cost effective. Because of the success of vendors like SalesForce, NetSuite, and many others thousands of businesses are quickly moving to find their place in the cloud.

The Advantages of SaaS

Software-as-a-Service deliverers a browser based single application to a large pool of end users. The advantage to customer is no need for software licensing or large investments in on-site severs. SaaS is truly a win-win. The provider reaps significant benefits as well. Instead of offering the old hosting model, the vendor has to maintain one application thus keeping costs to a minimum.

Main Features of SaaS Solutions:

•Responsive Development – Because SaaS takes place in the cloud, individuals and departments of a business can collaborate regardless of geographic location. This speeds up development cycles, increases productivity, and raises profits.

•Continuous Improvement – SaaS project cycles are much shorter and therefore allow a company to make changes it normally would find cost prohibitive. This allows a company to be more responsive to changes in the economy and competition.

•Flexible Pricing –It is much easier for a business to budget when using SaaS. There are few hidden costs and changes in service can be made monthly if needed.

Main Benefits of Subscribing to SaaS:

•Management can concentrate on its core business rather than IT concerns. More of the budget can be allocated to customer service and revenue production.
•The total cost of a SaaS software solution can be 50% less than an on-site solution.
•Turnaround time is dramatically reduced.
•Application enhancements are provided via a subscription that is often included in the initial cost.
•Flexibility and scalability.
•Superior service and support.
•Superior back-up/recovery and security.

Offshore Development

In this global economy there is a continuing trend toward offshore development. Enterprise cloud computing with SaaS crosses language and culture barriers ensuring a company can conduct business efficiently wherever operations are located.

Back to the Future

SaaS was born in business and sales departments that were frustrated with how unresponsive IT departments often seemed to be. One answer was to turn to off-site application service providers that could offer solutions they could implement quickly and efficiently. Today, IT departments are beginning to take the lead with SaaS solutions so they can ensure standards and security in using the new solutions in the cloud.

Related posts:

Linux and Ubuntu give users enough options that they could do anything with their desktop if they had the time and the coding background. For the users who want something to call home on their system, one of the various desktop environments will do the trick.

Choosing the right desktop environment and shell can change the user experience dramatically. Some are designed for smaller devices and touchscreens, while others are more at home piloting dedicated server and powerful machines. For new users, Linux can be a bit overwhelming, and the variety of choices only makes the task of choosing an environment more overwhelming. Luckily, we’ve assembled a list of the top four desktop environments below.

Gnome 3:

Gnome is widely regarded as one of the best choices for new users, despite Linus Torvald calling it a mess. It should be expected perhaps, that the choice for newbies might not appeal to the man who built the entire system, but regardless, it’s a solid choice for someone not used the Ubuntu system.

There is a bit of culture shock when you first turn on your device, since you can’t save anything to the desktop or launch programs from it. However, most of what you’ll need can be accessed through the Activities button. The completely minimalist screen changes to show you your apps laid out in neat little squares. Because it was optimized for touch screen, the squares are bigger than you’d typically see on a PC. That certainly doesn’t take away from the usefulness of the environment, though.

Unity:

Unity was first created to run on netbooks, so it too features a clean working space. Unlike Gnome, though, the desktop functions as a more normal space that allows you to save items to it and run program shortcuts from it. Unity is all about a clean interface, and sometimes it sacrifices functionality for design.

Launching an app that isn’t on the desktop or a dedicated task bar requires opening a window that organizes them by category, but it only shows a few. If you want to see more, you have to click the dedicated ‘more’ button. Expanding the screen theoretically should allow you to see more apps at once, but in practice, it only expands everything around the apps.
Despite these few flaws, Unity is a great program that will appeal to former Mac users.

Image via Wikipedia

Xfce:

Xfce is one of the more customizable options for Linux-enabled computers. It’s regarded by most as being unfriendly toward new users, but like many difficult mountains to climb, it’s worth the journey. Master Xfce, and you’ll be able to work with any desktop environment.

There are also other benefits than simply saying you use it, of course. Xfce comes with the code for several programs that work well in the environment. The calendar application, Orage, works similarly to iCalendar from Apple, making it compatible with many of your devices. Parole is a music player that is mostly playlist-based, which you could easily set up to play your favorites.

Related posts:

The jig’s up, folks. We all know that you can make a cheap tablet…

Between the Indian-funded Aakash and the Kindle Fire, the world has seen what developers focused on producing an affordable tablet can do. Though they have entirely different purposes, the two tablets created half a world apart from each other may very well usher in a new generation of tablets.

The Fire was designed for consumerism. As it stands, Amazon is losing money selling them at the current price point of $200. They should be able to break even and potentially make money off the tablets themselves once they reach a certain target sales goal. In the meantime, though, they hardly intend to just wave goodbye to profits. The tablet, which ships out in November, comes with free shipping for a month. The timing of course, makes it perfect for a little holiday shopping. By then, Amazon should be seeing black across the board.

The Aakash (Hindi for ‘sky’) was never designed to make money. British firm DataWind collaborated with the Indian government to make a tablet cheap enough for impoverished students to use. The price to make them comes out to be $50, but the government is subsidizing half of it for students. The government recognized that the technology gap was only increasing and leaving their students behind. Since India’s labor force has switched from agriculture to more service and tech-oriented fields, educating their labor force has become one of their main goals. If they fail and their children grow up not understanding basic technology, it could collapse India’s economy.

The effects:

The Kindle Fire will likely end up serving a similar, though decidedly less noble, purpose as the Aakash. College campuses are abuzz with the notion that the student population will be able to afford tablet technology. The prospect of using apps to study hasn’t been lost on teachers or students. The Amazon App Store may be less populated now than its Apple and Android brothers, but expect more education and online learning apps as educators realize the potential.

iPads have been paving the way for tablets in the classroom, and they’ve shown great promise. For younger students, the touch capability means they don’t have to know what the keys mean and they’re able to connect directly with the interface instead of having to figure out the relationship between a mouse and a screen. With some help from apps, the iPad has even served as a device to help autistic children.

While that’s great for schools that could afford to drop $500 on a tablet for each child, it doesn’t help those who can’t budget for it or those who aren’t able to get one of the hugely contested grants available for upgrading classroom technology. The classrooms and the countries whose students don’t get tablets are going to quickly start falling behind. The Fire and the Aakash should be able to step into that gap across the world and help students and educators make the classroom a more technologically friendly place.

Related posts:
