How to define a Remote Desktop Services License server for XenApp / XenDesktop 7.x Windows Server 2012 application server

I’ve been asked several times since XenDesktop 7 was released when Windows Server 2012 R1 and R2 were supported operating systems about how can a Remote Desktop Services License server be defined from a application server with a Windows Server 2012 R1 or R2 as the base OS:Remote Desktop licensing mode is not configured.Remote Desktop Services will stop working in xx days. On the RD Connection Broker server, use Server Manager to specify the Remote Desktop licensing mode and the license server.

I ran into this issue today. A previous co-worker had setup a single 2012 R2 server with the admin tools for users that hadn’t moved to windows 8 or 10 yet. So they could use the latest AD tools. But he didn’t setup a new 2012 R2 terminal server license server, so after 180 days it stopped working. Apparently not many people are using the new tools because I hadn’t heard one complaint about them not working 🙁

But I was upgrading our XenDesktop environment from 7.5 to 7.6 and noticed the single server, when I started digging I found the licensing issue. This post helped me address it by updating our GPO.
